Bellovac ABT
Post-operative autologous transfusion for orthopaedics
Bellovac ABT is a closed, post‑operative wound drainage and autologous blood transfusion system for orthopaedic procedures, in particular hip and knee surgery in adult patients. It collects shed blood from the surgical site and enables controlled reinfusion of the patient’s own blood, helping to maintain haemoglobin levels and reduce exposure to allogeneic (donor) blood transfusion.
Autologous transfusion as part of modern blood management
The risks and limitations associated with allogeneic (donor) blood transfusion are well described in the literature, and donated blood is a limited and costly resource. Many institutions therefore implement patient blood management strategies to reduce unnecessary exposure to allogeneic transfusion.
Bellovac ABT supports these strategies by enabling safe, post‑operative autologous transfusion in orthopaedic surgery.
Potential benefits include:
- Reduced need for allogeneic (donor) blood transfusion
- More predictable use of blood resources
- Support for institutional patient blood management policies
- A standardised, easy‑to‑learn system for clinical staff
Autologous blood can be integrated into several stages of peri‑operative care, including pre-donation, haemodilution, intra‑operative and post‑operative autotransfusion. Bellovac ABT is
intended specifically for autologous transfusion of blood collected from the wound after surgery.
