The future of endoscopy training
“Mikoto” – The Gold Standard Colonoscopy Training Simulator
A complex training platform was recently developed by Fuji et al. (1) based on a hybrid colonoscopy simulator. The system called “Mikoto” is an advanced mechanical trainer utilising motors, which allow the position change of the replicated abdomen. Furthermore, several functions are supported, such as abdominal compression and repositioning of the diaphragm, simulating the deep inspiration. Pressure and optical sensors enable measuring the distensibility of the colon phantom correlated with the potential pain experienced by the patient. This information together with other metrics tracked online is used to evaluate the trainee performance. (2)
The Mikoto is exclusively supplied by Aquilant in the UK through our partners Fujifilm and has the following impressive features:
The new Mikoto colonoscopy simulator will be demonstrated on the Fujifilm stand during ESGE Days in Berlin (25-28th April) and Endoport, Mariott Hotel Portsmouth (13-14th May).

Dr Sergio Coda describes his experience of using PuraStat to manage radiation proctopathy
In the UK, a total of 30,000 people are treated with radiotherapy annually. One of the most common side effects of radiotherapy is rectal bleeding, caused by radiation proctopathy (RP). Radiation proctopathy, as a consequence of the effect of radiation in the rectum, can hugely impact a patient’s quality of life. In this video, Dr Sergio Coda describes his experience of using PuraStat to manage Radiation Proctopathy.
PuraStat is a synthetic peptide hydrogel that when in contact with physiological fluids such as blood, self-assembles creating a scaffold which mimics the human extracellular matrix and stops the bleeding. PuraStat is used in a wide range of applications to manage active bleeding and prevent delayed bleeding.
Endorail, a magnetic balloon solution that optimises colonoscopy procedural outcomes.
Endorail will enhance the efficiency and safety of endoscopic procedures, offering a solution to solve looping and facilitate the competition of prolonged colonoscopies. Designed to streamline the colonoscopy process, Endorail combines its magnetic balloon solution with user-friendly features, which empowers physicians to overcome procedural challenges with ‘confidence and precision’.
With Endorail, physicians gain access to an on-demand tool that optimises procedural outcomes as well as reducing the healthcare costs associated with prolonged or incomplete procedures.
In 2023, Endostart conducted a multicentre clinical trial to demonstrate the high safety and efficacy profile of Endorail in the completion of difficult colonoscopies. The results of the study will be presented in the Digestive Disease Week Congress, taking place in Washington DC, May 18 to 21, 2024.
Aquilant have partnered with Endostart to bring the Endorail solution to the UK so contact us now for more information.
Size does matter!
SCALE EYE, real-time virtual scale to accurately measure the size of lesions in the colon.
When deciding on therapeutic intervention within the colon, such as resect and discard, EMR, and ESD, lesion size is considered one of the important factors. However, it is not always straightforward to estimate lesion size in the endoscopic field of view.
SCALE EYE is the latest technology to be launched as part of the ELUXEO Ultra platform, delivering a comprehensive package for endoscopists.
Fujifilm has developed SCALE EYE, a function designed to aid endoscopists in estimating the size of lesions in the colon. By simply pressing the endoscope switch, SCALE EYE is activated to support the endoscopist to determine the size of the lesion within the endoscopic field of view.
How SCALE EYE works
The SCALE EYE system includes the newly developed endoscope EC-760S-A/M, L, which is equipped with a class 1 laser. The laser point is visible within the endoscopic image. The position of the laser point changes relative to the distance between the tip of endoscope and the object. Depending on this laser point position, the scale interval size adjusts automatically.

Better quality to the “end”
As the national colon capsule endoscopy pilot continues in the UK the evidence continues to support the use of colon capsules in intermediate and low risk patients with gastrointestinal symptons1
To meet the surging demand of early screening for colon diseases, the OMOM Colon Capsule (Omom CC) endoscopy system has been developed with the latest innovations including enhanced image quality, longer battery life and revolutionary AI powered software.
OMOM CC aims to make diagnostic colonoscopy easier and smarter.
Jinshan host the OMOM Capsule Endoscopy Master Course on Wednesday, 24th April 2024, 13:00-18:00pm at the Waldorlf Astoria, Berlin.
Join us to learn the latest practical aspects and skills of clinical application in capsule endoscopy.
