Antimicrobial

Antimicrobial dressings play an important role in the prevention and management of infection. There are a wide range of dressings available and we are proud to offer some of the most innovative and safest antimicrobial dressings.

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the world’s most challenging health care problems and optimal wound care is key in fighting it. Dedicated to improving well-being through leading hygiene and health solutions, Essity and Healthcare21 support the Antimicrobial Stewardship Initiative.

Antimicrobial stewardship is a set of coordinated measures designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobials. This is done by promoting the optimal antimicrobial course of treatment, dosage and duration of therapy. To read more about this, please click here.

DACC technology in the Cutimed Sorbact range by Essity has proven clinical results. It is safe with no known side effects or contra-indications.Instead of using chemically active agents, Cutimed Sorbact employs a simple physical principle to effectively bind and inactivate pathogenic bacteria and fungi. With every dressing change, the reduced bacterial load helps to create optimum conditions for the natural wound healing process. It is effective against all fungi and bacteria –even against MRSA and VRE. Cutimed Sorbact does not use any antiseptic or antibiotic substances, therefore there is no risk of bacterial resistance.

Our AMD antimicrobial dressings contain 0.2% polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB), and foams contain 0.5%. PHMB is a bacteria-killing polymer that has been clinically proven to inhibit bacterial growth and offer additional protection when used in conjunction with infection control protocols. PHMB attacks bacteria on and within the dressing, helping to keep bacteria out of the wound, limiting cross-contamination and promoting a healing environment. They are proven to virtually eliminate bacterial penetration through, and growth within, a dressing. There is no known resistance to PHMB, which is likely to be due to the multiple modes of action.

Exudate Management

Managing wound exudate is a daily challenge for clinicians and regardless of the exudate level we have a variety of products available offering effective fluid management:

  • Cutimed Sorbion (protease modulating super-absorbent dressings) for moderate to very high levels of exudate
  • Cutimed Siltec (silicone foam dressings) for low to high levels of exudate
  • Cutimed Alginate; a calcium sodium alginate can absorb up to 20 times its own weight in exudate

With all the considerations necessary for wound healing, effective fluid management is key to success. On a day-to-day basis, exudate levels can fluctuate with the healing cycle, making it imperative for dressings to provide consistent, reliable results. Thankfully, no matter what exudate level or viscosity you are managing, you can count on the Cutimed® Range.

Wound Bed Preparation
