Living with BPH

WHAT IS BPH?

The prostate is a gland that plays an important role in sexual function. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, is a prostate that has grown to be larger than normal. BPH is not prostate cancer.

As the prostate grows, it may:
Constrict the urethra, making it difficult to urinate
-Apply pressure on the bladder, causing it to weaken and have difficulty emptying

Left untreated, BPH can cause significant health problems, including irreversible bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones, and incontinence.

The Impact of BPH on Quality of Life

Regardless of the symptoms, BPH presents several inconveniences to everyday life that no man should have to face.
Common indicators in this category include:

Inability to sleep through the night

Embarrassment and frustration

Difficulty in professional life

The need to urinate immediately or urgently

Relationship challenges

Decreased sexual function (erectile function / ejaculatory function)

Healthcare 21 and Mater Hospital agree partnership on prostate treatment - a first for Republic of Ireland

A new robotic treatment for enlarged prostate has been piloted in the Republic of Ireland for the first time following a partnership between Irish medical device distributor Healthcare 21 and the Mater Hospital.

The introduction of Procept Aquablation marks a significant advancement in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP), a common condition affecting approximately half of all men by the age of 60. If untreated, an enlarged prostate can lead to severe symptoms such as acute urinary retention and even kidney damage.

Aquablation therapy is a minimally invasive robotic-assisted procedure that uses a high-speed water jet to precisely remove excess prostate tissue and relieve pressure on the urethra. The treatment is guided by real-time ultrasound imaging which offers a high degree of accuracy while reducing the risk of damage to surrounding structures.

Traditional surgical treatments for enlarged prostate can often result in long-term quality of life complications, including urinary incontinence, ejaculatory dysfunction, and erectile dysfunction.

Healthcare 21 is one of Europe’s leading healthcare specialist sales, marketing, and solutions providers. It was founded in Cork in 2003 and has established itself as a trusted distribution partner for both global MedTech leaders and emerging innovators launching new technologies across all therapy areas. It is part of the AddLife Group which operates 86 subsidiaries across 30 European countries.
