PuraStat for Urology

The Science behind PuraStat

PuraStat is a ready-to-use, slightly viscous, haemostatic solution of synthetic peptides in the form of a prefilled syringe(1).

The 2.5% aqueous peptide solution is composed of 4 repeating amino acids: R: Arginine, A: Alanine, D: Aspartic Acid, A: Alanine — so the final peptide in PuraStat is RADA16.

Contact between PuraStat and physiological liquids (such as blood) causes the RADA16 peptide solution to be exposed to ions and neutralised, resulting in the formation of ß-sheets. These ß sheets self-assemble into nanofibers on a scale similar to the extracellular matrix. As a result, the peptide molecules quickly form a three dimensional matix of nanofibers, creating a mechanical barrier which allows for haemostasis.

Indications for Use

For urology application, PuraStat is indicated for haemostasis in the following situations encountered during surgery, when haemostasis by ligation or standard means is insufficient or impractical(1):

  • Bleeding from small blood vessels and oozing from capillaries of the parenchyma and surrounding
    tissues of solid organs
  • Oozing from vascular anastomoses to native or artificial vessels, on the surface of blood vessels and
    surrounding tissues
